Everyone has to start somewhere and you’ll be amazed at how quickly you’ll improve!
Full courses are either 5 or 10 weeks long.
What do you do in a class?
Students who come to a Tarka Pottery class will be walked through each stage of the process of making their first projects, from how to prepare your clay, through to glazing your bisque-fired item.
Making things with clay is a multi-step process. At first, you will build things with clay using traditional techniques. Your projects dry to ‘leather hard’, at which time you can finish your decoration in another session.
At another class, you can try your hand on a potter’s wheel. We will teach you how to centre your clay so that you can make stable walls and viable projects for firing. If you have previous experience and know you only want to throw or only want to hand-build, just let us know in advance.
Projects are bisque fired when they are bone dry (usually after a few days). The kilns are stacked and emptied by our team.
After bisque firing, the clay body is still porous, and able to absorb water so glaze dries quickly. We have a selection of glazes which you can choose from or you can buy your own.
After the glaze firing, you can then take your creations home!
