HAND BUILDING COILING This cute planter was made HAND BUILDING COILING This cute planter was made during a Creative Clay Experience with us in the studio recently. During the making, coils were rolled by hand and laid on top of each other, adding slip as needed and smoothed by gently blending the clay with fingers, a rib or a damp sponge. This technique allows leaving some of the makers' fingerprints, giving the project a unique handmade finish. Coiling is such a tactile experience, experimenting with how you blend the clay to create different textures and shapes and you let your creativity flow. Every person creates a completely unique pot. It’s beginning to feel a bit like Christmas here It’s beginning to feel a bit like Christmas here in the studio. Our class students are getting festive with their makes with the change in weather and fast approach to December. Lots of their friends and family enjoy seeing their Christmas displays and, if they are on the ‘Nice not Naughty’ list, may well receive some gorgeous and lovingly handmade clay gifts and tags this year! With the weather being a bit colder, using our solar polar and energy stored in batteries to fire the kilns is such a benefit in reducing our fossil fuel electricity use along with the very welcome bonus of a warm, cosy studio on many of these dark, wet mornings. With another three weeks of classes, before we break up for Christmas, there’s still plenty of time to book in for a creative clay session. We were recently invited to deliver a decorative s We were recently invited to deliver a decorative slip tile workshop at Ilfracombe Library. Our pottery workshop was quickly fully booked with individuals keen to get creative on one of the library's many workshops and drop-in sessions. In advance at the studio, we prepared stoneware tiles so that they would be leather hard on the day, and in a perfect condition to work with. There were plenty of tiles to allow the participants to explore techniques on a couple of tiles each, before choosing one to have fired. Jax demonstrated with leaves, stencils, and torn paper to show how it’s possible to use natural, synthetic materials and tools to create a design, whether planned or just see where the slip and materials take you! WEDDING CELEBRATION More smiling faces in the stu WEDDING CELEBRATION More smiling faces in the studio after a Throwing Taster with Talia and Helen, who have just got married and are staying in Devon for their Honeymoon. They had great fun throwing their very own pots on the wheel and we were surprised to see a candleholder being thrown, thanks to the help provided by Becky and Lynne. The happy couple chose their favourite pots to decorate and glaze as a lovely memory of their wedding and honeymoon in North Devon. Whilst the craft of throwing takes time and patience to truly master, you can learn the principles in a friendly, fun and encouraging way during one of our pottery throwing experiences or weekly pottery classes. You'll have plenty of time to practice your new skills, with gentle and encouraging guidance from one of our experienced throwers. Of course, you get to keep a pot that you handmade yourself, to either collect or have posted onto you after firing. This time, our brilliant Lynne spent her day demonstrating coiling as well as throwing. For the coiling demonstration, Lynne, Jax and Becky took turns adding to this large vessel while incorporating natural textures to reflect their beautiful surroundings. On the wheel, Lynne demonstrates how to throw a cylinder. Arguably, this is the most important shapes to master. CREATIVE CLAY WORKSHOP Perfect for a variety of CREATIVE CLAY WORKSHOP Perfect for a variety of groups of all ages and abilities, our Creative Clay Workshops can be tailored to you and what you'd like to make. These guys used the traditional technique of coiling to make a range of pots - from tall vases to wide bowls. We then used coloured slips to show the group how to layer different colours using stencils to reveal patterns underneath their top colour. Our very own Becky, Lynne and @elizabethalicewilli Our very own Becky, Lynne and @elizabethalicewilliams did a fabulous job yesterday along with other local potters including @lucyRockliffe and @thewhiteroom.creativespace Bindy and @fouracrespottery Anita Gibson, manning raku kilns at the Westcountry Potters Association Clayfest30 celebrations. Jax was inside helping participants get their pots waxed and glazed ready for firing, along with Graham Macey @ceramiphile and @susan_luker_ceramics A fabulous day all round! With so much to do and see, and inclusive with Throwdown Challenges, pottery films, an exhibition of members work and a great opportunity to network with other potters, not just those who teach masterclasses, but beginners, students and hobby potters too. Fruit always look awesome on pottery painted items - there are so many great idea out there of how to create beautiful designs on bisqueware and our studio team are always happy to help with making suggestions on how to get the design you want! We love how the plate has used a wash of the pink for the background while the mug has been sponged all over in the pink and the cherries have been dotted using the end of a paintbrush one the plate while they've been painted on the mug. Two different techniques but both achieving brilliant results! SPLATTING IN THE SUN! Something we hear all the t SPLATTING IN THE SUN! Something we hear all the time at Tarka Pottery is "I'm not creative". Now Rosie here certainly doesn't have that problem, she's been coming to the studio since she was a baby and has no end of brilliant creative ideas but something that we find makes any piece of pottery look fab is splatting paint! You can choose to go with a colour theme like greens and blues or you can just pick the brightest, boldest colours and let loose. No matter what, these splatty pots always look stunning. This plate was formed using one of our @hartleyandnoble moulds. It was then finished using a rubbed kidney to compress the clay and a damp sponge to smooth over any imperfections. COILED ABSTRACT POT We love the autumnal colours COILED ABSTRACT POT We love the autumnal colours used on this piece. Using coloured slips, painting the vessel in black before layering shades of red and orange over the top. Sgraffito was then used to reveal the black below - almost creating the impression of feathers or fire! It really isn't all just about throwing on the wheel here at Tarka Pottery.
